E-News Updates from Rep. Jed Davis | May 2025

Hello and welcome to my May 2025 E-Newsletter!

The House Bill Third Reading Deadline passed last month, meaning all House bills not passed go back to the Rules Committee and are essentially ‘dead’ for the remainder of our spring session. Since then, we have started working on passing Senate bills through our chamber.

Meanwhile, the FY26 budget fight is heating up, and the pressure is real. Despite the Governor’s claims of balancing budgets and making cuts, we’re seeing the same old pattern: more fees, more taxes, and a higher cost of living. One idea on the table? A road mileage tax – yes, they want to tax you for every mile you drive. You can’t make this stuff up.

It’s a terrible idea, especially for rural communities and families like the ones I represent.

I’ll keep showing up, pushing back, and fighting for common sense in Springfield as we move deeper into budget talks and final legislation.

As always, reach out to my district office anytime. I’m here to serve.

We did it! The controversial Homeschool Act was put on pause, at least through the end of this year. This win is huge for homeschool and private school families who just want to be left alone.

However, don’t get too comfortable. The bill’s sponsor has already stated she’s planning to bring it back, possibly with changes. Stay tuned to my e-newsletter, Facebook, and website because when it returns, you’ll hear it from me first.

Thank you for fighting with me on this issue! Your voices truly made a difference.

This month, I stood alongside Senate Republican Deputy Leader Sue Rezin and child protection advocate Michelle Peterson to call for immediate action on Andrew’s Law, a no-nonsense proposal to close gaping loopholes in Illinois law helping child predators dodge real consequences.

House Bill 1140 and Senate Bill 284 would ban plea deals for anyone charged with grooming, human trafficking, or involuntary sexual servitude of a minor. It also tightens restrictions on where convicted child sex offenders can go, keeping them far away from facilities meant for kids.

Let’s be clear: the exploitation of children isn’t accidental – it’s calculated. Offenders know how to work the system. Andrew’s Law shuts the loopholes and draws a hard line: if you target kids, there’s no soft landing.

Michelle Peterson, a constituent from Morris, knows the cost of these loopholes all too well. After her son was groomed, she helped pass child protection laws in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, and Montana. It’s now time for Illinois to follow suit.

“If lawmakers really believe in protecting children,” Michelle said, “then Andrew’s Law can’t just be another bill – it has to be a line in the sand. We don’t need more debate. We need action. Call it for a vote.”

HB 1140 and SB 284 are both awaiting committee assignment. Senator Rezin and I are committed to doing everything we can to move Andrew’s Law forward before the 104th General Assembly wraps up.

Illinois Democrats filed a bill to legalize prostitution. This reckless proposal would open the floodgates for human trafficking and further exploit the most vulnerable members of our society.

Perhaps this bill is an attempt to appease the radical far-left or a misguided effort to address our $3 billion budget deficit. Either way, it’s reckless. The people of Illinois deserve leaders who will protect them, not assist with their exploitation.

Let’s send a clear message: Illinois should be protecting its citizens, not enabling predators.

I’ve launched a petition opposing this dangerous idea, and I encourage you to add your name today at RepJedDavis.com or by clicking here.
