Rep. Davis Condemns Bill to Legalize Physician-Assisted Suicide

SPRINGFIELD – In the final days of session, Illinois Democrats in the House rammed through a bill allowing physician-assisted suicide, using a procedural trick called “gut-and-replace” to hijack a completely unrelated proposal titled Sanitary Food Preparation. The result? One of the most controversial bills of the year snuck through under a misleading title with minimal public scrutiny.

As a result, State Representative Jed Davis (R-Yorkville) issued the following statement:

“Let’s be clear — Senate Bill 1950 wasn’t debated honestly. It started as a bill about food safety and ended with legalizing physician-assisted suicide in Illinois. If Democrats were proud of this bill, they would have run it under its real name and debated it in the open. They didn’t — and this process speaks volumes.

“It’s not just a moral issue, it’s a trust issue. People deserve a government that tells the truth, not one that manipulates the process. The same politicians who scream about ‘transparency’ just passed a life-or-death law by hiding it behind a food code title.

“I voted no, not just because I believe in protecting life, but because I believe Illinoisans deserve honesty, respect, and a government they can trust. It’s the leadership I promise on a daily basis.”
