Rep. Davis’ Firefighter Eligibility Bill Assigned to Committee

SPRINGFIELD – State Representative Jed Davis (R-Yorkville) has filed a bill addressing firefighter shortages across Illinois by lowering the eligibility age for career firefighters. House Bill 1098, recently assigned to the Police and Fire Committee, would allow 18 to 20-year-olds to become full-time firefighters—down from the current minimum age of 21.

“House Bill 1098 is a win-win for both future firefighters and fire departments struggling to fill positions. This simple change opens doors for young adults ready to serve, while also helping ensure our communities stay protected.”

Davis emphasized the urgency of the issue: “Fire departments statewide are facing critical staffing shortages, putting both communities and first responders at risk. We should be making it easier—not harder—for those eager to step up and serve.”

HB 1098 is part of Davis’ Promoting Careers Bill Package, a set of proposals aimed at expanding career opportunities and strengthening Illinois’ workforce.
