Veto Session Updates
Illinois legislators returned to Springfield last month for two weeks of our annual veto session. This year was truly unlike anything we’ve seen before.
The first week saw almost zero real work. Instead, the majority party paraded a slew of non-binding resolutions condemning our federal government. It was an opportunity to score political points – not pass meaningful legislation.
However, the second week of veto ramped up with the passage of many substantive bills. Unfortunately, most of those bills are poor public policy focused on all the wrong things.
Here are a few highlights of the bad bills we saw pass this veto session:
- $2.5 billion Chicago transit bailout, including millions stolen from our road improvement lockbox fund.
- Increased restrictions on where immigration enforcement may work, making things more dangerous for law enforcement and our communities.
- Another state handout pouring money into energy technologies that are unable to meet our needs, resulting in higher utility bills for families and unreliable, unaffordable power.
Every time we go to Springfield, legislators reach deeper and deeper into your wallet, with no tangible results.
To end on a positive note, one good thing did come out of our veto session this year. Illinois seniors will be happy to know we passed a bill providing property tax relief for seniors on fixed incomes. The program’s maximum income limit will increase to $75,000 in 2026, allowing more seniors to take advantage of the exemption. I voted yes on this bill.
Prison Conditions Town Hall

I led a bipartisan panel to discuss prison conditions in Illinois. We welcomed over 100 concerned constituents who shared their stories and wanted to be a part of the solution regarding this issue. Thank you to State Representative Barbara Hernandez for working across the aisle with my office to make this event happen!
Politics in Springfield are too often divided by partisanship. This event represents a move in the right direction—toward putting good policy ahead of politics. I look forward to turning these productive discussions into practical solutions.
